The O’oma shoreline parcel is adjacent to the Kohanaiki Shoreline Park. It is owned by the County of Hawaii and was purchased with Public Access Open Space Natural Resources (PONC) Funds in 2013. The Kohanaiki ‘Ohana has been working to restore the native strand vegetation and remove invasive plants from the O’oma shoreline and maintain a healthy beach environment for families and visitors.
In this video, student volunteers from West Hawaii Explorations Academy are planting coconut trees and other native strand vegetation to prevent beach erosion.
Beaches are valuable recreational and cultural spaces. They provide opportunities for relaxation and various outdoor activities. By safeguarding against erosion, we ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty of these coastal areas and engage in activities that contribute to their physical well-being.
